I have always been interested in technology, this could range from physically building PC’s to messing around with BIOS settings and system configurations to try and eek out as much performance as possible. Naturally, this led me to the world of cyber; why not swap the interest of optimal performance for optimal security or even both? The latter being a lot easier said than done.
How it started
After finishing college early, part way through one of the many COVID-19 lockdowns, I had to make the decision between higher education and trying to break into the industry. As I never particularly enjoyed school this was quite an easy decision to make.
The first thing I did was go on to LinkedIn, ask family and friends and find out if anyone knew someone that worked in the industry. From that point, I sent out as many messages as possible to try and get some idea of how to approach the industry, what businesses were looking for and what type of roles I might be interested in.
After a couple of months of self-directed learning with HackTheBox, and similar resources, I contacted the directors of i3Secure to see if they had any further advice or knew of any opportunities. By luck, the position I was in fit very well to i3Secure’s goals to inspire and develop the newcomers to the industry and that has led me to where I am today.
How it’s going
A year and 2 months in, it is safe to say I made the right decision. The time has flown by, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. I have picked up a so much industry knowledge and context that I do not believe I could have learnt in an education environment. This has been possible with the company wide support from the varied skillsets and experience that sit within the team at i3Secure that can cover all bases of cyber security.
I think it would be unfair not to mention how supportive my manager, Anthony Lloyd, has been throughout the last year. After a “quick” catch up on electric cars, solar panels, DIY disasters as well as trying not to trigger his home automation by mentioning she who shall not be named (Alexa), there is time for me to bounce ideas off him for solutions regarding security queries clients are having. This can range from correct terminology to overseeing and clarifying my understanding on security tools and their outputs. Anthony is not only supportive from a work point of view but day to day life, if there are any issues or worries I want to discuss then Anthony is happy to listen.
Being in a consultancy is a fantastic way to enter the industry as there is such a variety of work to get involved in. With i3Secure. in the past year, I have gained experience in areas like application security testing all the way to asset management and everything in between. These has also been in a variety of sectors/industries such as logistics, healthcare, local government and education which all present their unique issues.

My future aspirations
As I am still new to the industry and the world of work, it is quite hard to pinpoint a direction for the long term. As for where I am right now, I would like to continue in consultancy for a good couple more years to keep expanding my knowledge base across all the areas in Cyber Security. This will not just help to make an informed decision for my next steps, but also, I believe the context and experience it gives you is extremely valuable in advising and/or decision making at a more technical level. A good example of this being some smaller pieces of NHS/healthcare work and discussions I have been a part of. As this is potentially one of the most difficult environments to “lock down” from a cyber security perspective due to the nature of maximum availability of data and systems having a direct impact on life, it presents risks and very niche scenarios that you do not see in other industries. This alone changes the way you look and approach issues across the board.
